Wendy's mom, who lived in Guanzhou, met Wendy's dad, who was visiting from Hong Kong, in 1961. They fell in love, got married, and had Wendy, who was born in 1962. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough food to feed the family, so he fled back to Hong Kong just three months after Wendy was born, in order to make some money to send back to his wife and daughter.
Wendy never knew her father when she was growing up. Yet her parents stayed in contact by letter, and he continued to send money back to his family throughout the years of the Cultural Revolution and beyond. After 18 years, Wendy and her mom finally got permission to cross the border into Hong Kong, and thus in 1980, they reunited with her father. Wendy's parents, who had only known each other for a little over a year in the early 1960s, had stayed loyally in touch for almost two decades, and they have been living happily together ever since!
