Softball: A Plausible Argument for the Purchase of Ray-Bans
Dear People,
In a wondrously majestic match that was played on the pristine polyurethane fibers of Maxwell Field's magnificent Astroturf sheathing, Chris Fure's team barely staved off my own, 10-8. That it took place under gorgeous post-storm skies made it all the more magical, and indeed, that in itself dramatically lessened the sting of having to abandon our malarial suck-swamp of a homeland.
Unfortunately, Maxwell's home plate is positioned in such a way that for late morning games on luminous days, batters can find themselves staring straight into the hostile rays of a radiant sun. This is especially true if the opposing pitcher decides to intentionally throw high and lingering cornea balls, which is in fact what Enid did ceaselessly to devastating effect. Of course I cast no aspersions, for we all know that it's every athlete's duty to advance the cause of their team by any permissible tactic, and that's true even if they violate the most basic Kantian principles of deontological ethics. No argument there.
It's important to mention all that, for while it would be easy to ascribe my team's defeat to my two consecutive late-inning bases-loaded rally-killing popouts, those six dispositively stranded runs must be seen in proper context. Specifically, I think it's only fair to note that in each instance, by the time I had quit flailing and actually connected with the ball, I was both nauseous from vertigo and legally blind. So sure, Enid had a 'right' to toss those evasive little orbs straight into the optical kill zone, but I would gently suggest that pyrrhic is the triumph when it shocks the conscience of a nation. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11-the first one of an inevitably glorious year!-IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning

Softball: The Ceaseless Quest for Knowledge
Dear People,
There will probably be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, and as of now there are still three slots left. As always, if it rains between now and then, you will need to check email that morning around 10. Please also remember that even if Codornices is unplayable, we would still likely be able to use Maxwell's sensual Astroturf sheathing since Cal remains on break.
This week's field fee is just $4, and for this week only that includes a special post-game presentation of my long awaited findings on the Genome-wide Association of 107 Phenotypes in Arabidopsis Thaliana Inbred Lines (and for the record, I'm not saying that just because I happen to like the adjective 'inbred').
Happy New Year

Softball: Sunday 9:45AM: Maxwell it is!....
Dears,
Codornices is both officially closed and basically unplayable without some major hydraulic triage. Moreover, she looks embittered by last night's deluge. Let's let her be.
The good news, though, is that Astroturf-glorious Maxwell is empty as of 9:30, and while there are no guarantees, I think we'll be fine. Of course while some of you are now undoubtedly frightened by the nimbostratus coating that despicably darkens our skies, every fiber of my being tells me these current clouds are all cackle and bravado, no wet.
Life is risk!/Drink hot tea!/See ya at 11!....Raymond 845-7552

i-Maxwell Field is located on Piedmont Avenue, on the East side of campus, across from Hass Business School, right between the Memorial Stadium and the Greek Theatre. The adjacent parking lot is closed down, but there is plenty of free parking on both Bancroft and Durant, a 3-5 minute walk away.
ii- If some of you can get to the field closer to 10:30 (for batting practice or whatever), the less likley it is that we'll face softball-hostile interlopers.
iii- Two slots left!
iv-Games at Maxwell are always free, compliments of the fine cash-strapped folks at UC regents.
v-In the last couple minutes, the skies have grown darker. I say stout resolve, courage, and ever forward, for light drizzle is never a game killer on clean and pristine Astroturf. But if it really starts to rain between now and then, check back on email since we may need to reassess. Grrrr
