Softball: The Tempered Musings of a Heliophilic City Boy

Dear People,

As you know, I happen to think that outside of the great cuddly mammals like bears, dogs and your garden-variety felines, “nature” is totally overrated. From spiders, hyenas and fungi to fire, hurricanes and syphilis, we all know that the physical underpinnings of the natural universe are a misanthropic panoply of softball-hostile trouble-makers. Sure, I may be an ‘urban freako’ who’s overstating my case, but it was in fact rain—that most prosaic nuisance in nature’s climatic repertoire—which just killed our most cherished aerobic dreams, and it will likely be rain again that harasses us throughout this dreadful winter (I grew up in Los Angeles, where we don’t do lame-o seasons, and certainly not winter, which is just one reason why it’s the greatest metropolis on the face of this earth).

The point is that I will do my best to provide you with the vital aerobic release that you’ll so clearly crave in the moist, wetty months ahead, and if that means methodically stringing up a taut, 20,000 square foot bright lime-green translucent plastic condom-thing that is 200 feet high off the ground and keeps dry every square inch of the park from home plate to the yak-covered tundra beyond centerfield, then so be it. Yes, I’m one of those few who see things as they aren’t and ask “why the fuck not?,” and therefore there will be a game at Corornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond

PS: The ECIS rules remain in effect, and for the sake of simplicity, a cancelled game freezes the count. This means that for you five unfortunate souls who were put on the stand-by list last time, you could be placed on it again this time. However, you should still commit if you want to play since I expect less of a rush, and regardless, some of you would have a decent chance of getting in later in the week.

PPS: I am delighted to report that Alex made it to Massachusetts safe and sound, and that despite the 3,500 mile journey, even his cat and car are in fine post-trip fiddle.

PPPS: I will be in China and Vietnam the first half of January, which means that anyone interested in organizing the first two games of 2007 in exchange for unchecked dictatorial powers over the entire community should let me know soon. And of course if you’re into spontaneous athletic tourism, you should be aware that I’m hoping to organize at least one game at the Hai Phong City Park (behind Ho’s Duck and Burger Shop, between the old harbor and lemongrass fields), most likely around January 10th.

Softball: Suspense

Dear People,

There will hopefully be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, and as of now, it is full. If you committed and need to cancel, please let me know ASAP, and if you’re too late, feel free to check on open slots later.

Given the contemptible climate, you will most likely need to check email Sunday morning. Assuming we can play, this week’s field fee is just $3, which in inflation-adjusted dollars is actually cheaper than it would have been in 1935! And if we can’t play, I might organize a grueling aerobic alternative, such as frisbee, football or pizza…Ray 845-7552
