Softball: Turgenev’s Lingering Ghost

Dear People,

Chris Fure’s team seized an early inning lead from my own, and then, like a swarm of despicable army ants devouring a perfectly innocent scorpion, methodically sucked the very marrow from our battered and brittle bones. In fairness, Chris’ captainship was brilliant and Enid’s pitching was, well, devastating, but ultimately, their 12-8 triumph was a product of Justin’s 5th inning triple over Matt’s discombobulated little head—a kinesiologic act of such unexpected pubescent chutzpah that I believe it stunned us into permanent and punch-drunk submission.

Ironically, though, Justin himself had little time to wallow in the glory of the moment. Indeed, just seconds after blasting the greatest hit of his 13 short years on this planet, Alan Miller inexplicably sent him dashing for home on a shallow fly-out to left. Alas, the throw to the plate beat him by just four and half feet, thereby begging the question; What kind of twisted base coach orders a mere youth to run directly toward his near-certain doom?

Oh, my friends, if it were only so simple; For Alan is not only Justin’s 3rd base mentor, but also, in fact, his beloved and only father! (and thus by definition, official scribe of the most current Justinian Codes). Needless to say, the kid himself was justifiably tweaked by the entire debacle, so it wasn’t a total shock when right after the game, he discreetly pulled me aside, pointed to good ’ol pop, and bitterly asked me about “a possible trade.”

In all candor, I could probably take the case myself and quickly get the Justinator an entirely new dad from Foster Athletic Services. But after discussing it further, I gently convinced him that for the moment, he and Alan should explore the potential salve of deep aerobic therapy. I, of course, will not be their therapist, if for no other reason than that I am incorrigibly biased in favor of those frisky young teens who are determined to spring themselves free from the inept tyranny of their loving parental units. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM (which is just like noon expect that it’s actually an hour earlier), IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray

Softball: 11, not 12 (Again: 11, not 12)….

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM and as of now, it is full. As always, please contact me ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and as always, feel free to contact me later if you are trolling for reopened slots.
This week’s field fee is just $3, which I happen to think is a stunningly fair price to pay for our #1 choice in time and space….Ray 845-7552
