Softball: Musings on a Transition of Majestic Import

Dear People,

In the most magnificent performance of his storied 13-year career in unaffiliated email-organized sport, Peter led Chris Fure’s team to a sublime won-on-the-last-hit 18-17 triumph over my own, thanks in large part to his two homers, two triples and a single. OK, that’s not totally “accurate,” in that that the two homers and two triples were actually a pop-up and three ground outs, but that’s not important now. The fact is that this was the Gazelle’s last game before his long trek cross country, and in smashing that one 8th inning hit straight up the middle, Peter let it be known that he was leaving on his own damn terms—proud, stout and ready to boogie, Philly-style.

Even better, the glorious denouement came with Tom Bilyard’s awesome game-ending blast to left in the bottom of the 9th, which is all the more appropriate since, as you may recall, he proudly hails from Folkestone, England. Yeah, perhaps coincidence is nothing more than the raw destiny of statistical context, and I, of all people, am willing to accept that. But for what it’s worth, let the record show that Folkestone is closer to Philadelphia than Philadelphia is to Berkeley, except that it’s not.

The point is that Billiard Boy is now the newest recruit to join our constantly churning roster of cherished regulars, and with his dispositive hit on the final day of Peter’s reign, it is clear that the aerobic torch has now been passed to a new generation. Of course we can’t be snookered by the allure of potential itself, which is to say that while Tom will try with every fiber of his British being, it’s still far from clear whether he can truly fill Peter’s shoes, trousers and inimitable purple skivvies. And therefore there will be a game at Grove this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray

PS: It’s close to impossible to embed a photo in a Gmail letter (apparently the mother company is unfamiliar with digital technology), but I am attaching a nice picture of the festivities at Peter’s goodbye party.

-----------

I’m renting a space in a beautiful Craftsman Home. Looking for a considerate, responsible, neat, person, who can laugh and enjoy life. You get a beautiful room, in a safe warm environment.

We are your new housemates. Female and male, who are both professionals, and on different schedules. Both up and out w/ coffee in hand most of the time by 7-8am.

We keep the house very clean, have nothing but respect for each other’s privacy, and know how to let our hair down when the time is right. Home cooked meals happen from time to time, and the BBQ is always rollin’.

Hank is the chocolate lab who protects the house.

Big yard, street parking, washer and dryer. All the normal house stuff, except that it’s a really cool pad.

Great neighborhood: 1 block to Solano Ave, and 1 block to San Pablo, food, Bart, buses, schools.

The home is fully furnished, so there isn't much room for furniture beyond what you need for the bedroom.

We share all the bills including wireless internet service.

Rent is $725 + 1/3 utilities per month.

Contact me if interested!…
