Softball: Stoic (Musings of a Wounded Sissy)

Dear People,

Let the record show that after smashing a subtle 7th inning curve ball toward the deep center-right hinterlands of Grove’s aphid-laden outfield, I found myself rounding 1st and heading toward 2nd with the speed and focus of a crazed South African cheetah in pursuit of fresh antelope stew. Unfortunately though, I apparently “misjudged” the vital trigonometric interplay of bodily arc and velocity, and thus rather than dart onward toward 3rd, I soon discovered that when unexpectedly sliding on hard pebble-covered dirt, it’s really not advisable to use your exposed left kneecap as your one and only braking mechanism. I mean really, really not advisable.

In any case, I am no longer bitter about my team succumbing to Jonny’s, 15-13. Nor do I resent the frantic screams of “Tag the bastard!” as I writhed in post-stumble shock just inches from my second base sanctuary. I fully understand that as a people, we are trained to cherish the imperative dynamics of victory, and obviously one person’s agony is immaterial to the greater aerobic whole.

On the other hand, it’s now several days later, and my dollar-sized scab-covered boo-boo is still so friggin’ sore that I find myself with a deep and mystical connection to those nutso medieval Spanish rabbis who would gather at scholarly conferences to passionately debate whether, after all is said and done, it’s better to be alive than to never have been born at all. Sometimes I’ll look down at my tender and throbbing kneecap and conclude that I honestly don’t know, and even the great Maimonides was apparently conflicted.

But then I’ll start to think about all the radiant bliss on so many of your cherubic little faces whenever you get the opportunity to scamper around the bases yourselves, especially when you can avoid being a retard like me. Yeah, it’s then that I truly realize that despite all its suckitude, life is worth living. And therefore there will be a game at CODORNICES this SUNDAY at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray

PS: For the next few days I will be in a distant land, far, far, away, so it may take me longer than usual to ok your commits. Try not to worry…
