Softball: Heroism in the Lower Roster
Dear People,
Nearly three brutal hours after it all began, my team held a devastating 19-18 lead over Chris Fures, with two out, nobody on base and Peter at bat with a crushing 0-2 count in the top of the 9th. For those who rarely show up, I should clarify that the Peternator is perhaps the most cherished player in our entire community, yet at the risk of sounding analytically incorrect, I would say that if your sides got a one-run lead with two outs in the games final inning, Peters ascension to the plate can only be viewed as a statistical gift from the Lord.
In any case, let me briefly explain how my team lost, 23-19. As is my wont, I found myself playing the Petester between 1st base and the pitchers mound, but unexpectedly, he smashed a searing pop fly well over my busily daydreaming head, about half way between 1st and 2nd. Naturally, this rendered me confused and ineffectual, and once again, I felt utterly unclean. Even worse, Peter took off like a wild gazelle (albeit one with tiny little turtle legs), and while I probably couldve run back, grabbed the ball and still made the final out, I figured that since Susan was in a somewhat better position to render the coup de grace, I would just stand there and continue musing on the staggering insignificance of human existence.
Unfortunately, and for reasons I dont pretend to understand, Susan gingerly approached the just fallen orb as if she needed a search warrant in order to actually pick it up and end the game. Thus, the ball just sat there on the dusty infield soil as our terrapin hero successfully scurried to first. Alas, as majestic moments of unsightly communal paralysis go, this one was particularly unhelpful, for a single, two doubles and a triple later, my team was reduced to a shell-shocked shadow of its former inevitably-triumphant self.
Still, I must confess that there is something curiously liberating about leading your team to within one pitch of its final rendez-vous with victory, only to let it crash and burn on the insensate and random shoals of destiny denied. And therefore there will be a game at SAN PABLO #2 this SUNDAY at 4PM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning

PS: Im not much of a patriot. Imagine no countries, last refuge of a scoundrel, etc. Yet I must confess that when I watched this excellent demonstration on how to jump-start a synaptically sabotaged recall-memory, I found myself quite moved
