Softball: A Pair of Almost Never
Dear People,
In a wondrous paragon of aerobic history's derivative allure, Anthony's team barely held off my own with two out and bases loaded on the last and most tragic play of the game (by definition), 17-15. In fact, you may recall that just two short weeks ago, it was my unmitigated pleasure to write you that
<<
.Reece and Ben were the first two players in the history of this league that barreled straight into a nearly simultaneous double force-out at the plate, and if that isn't the essence of impavid kinesiological glory in every sense of that ceaselessly abused expression, then I don't know what. >> (For a more robust and contextualized read, see http://www.eslnotes.com/ray/090314.html ).
That's right; It took over 17 years for this community to experience the cleansing euphoria of a simultaneous double force-out at the plate, yet this past weekend---and specifically, just two weeks to the hour after losing this most venerable of recreational cherries---my own team pulled it off again (!!), just half an inning before our ghastly demise. If you must know, I still get bittersweet goose bumps just thinking about it.
In any case, and to wit: Paul Fine blasted a staggering one-on one-out line drive down the left field line, and with his team nursing that slender two-run lead, he bolted out of the gate determined to double it. Alas, not all his peeps are as velocious as he is, and thus by the time Katherine had darted from 1st to 3rd, good 'ol Eyeball-Head had still failed to see that he was not only about to lap her (which is both highly illegal and totally bad form), but that the ball from the deep left tundra was now making its way back into play. Yeah, a train wreck was a comin', and I was gonna relish it.
Sure enough, Rachel had no choice as a base-coach of principle but to send both runners onward to their rendezvous with destiny. And thus, as Saadia grabbed the throw to shallow left, he instantly pivoted, zeroed in on Bryan at catcher and then hurled the finest bullet to home I've ever seen, assuring that Katherine and Paul would become only the third and forth players in the history of this league that barreled straight into a nearly simultaneous double force-out at the plate, and if this isn't the Paulian essence of an utterly heuristic failure in every historiographical sense of that ceaselessly abused expression, then I don't know what. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning . . .Raymond
PS: Ali cannot find her much beloved glove, which is light brown with a Nike swoosh. Since every fiber of my intuitive being says somebody accidentally picked it up, please check if it's possible that you did.
PPS: The Scottish Question:
As a philosophically inclined internationalist, I tend to disfavor secessionist movements if for no other reason than that more countries mean more borders. However, I do have to concede that the arguments presented here are pretty dang compelling . . .
