Softball: Reasons to Play

Dear People,

After inadvertently stacking Jeremy’s team with the top four power hitters of the day (including two unknown and frightfully awesome rookies), I had my side look deep into the renewing purity of its own communal feebleositude. Admittedly, such a strategy is fraught with risk, but it paid off big time, and thus SEVEN double-plays later (!), we emerged triumphant, 19-9.

Oh sure, force-trading Peter for Tim at the end of the 1st inning may have played a tiny part in the final outcome, but I don’t think we should overemphasize it, lest it be implied that somehow one is "better" than the other. The reality is that both are cherished members of the community, and in the end, there’s simply no way to make such speculative comparisons, outside the marginal dimensions of fielding, throwing and batting. I, for one, just won’t go there.

In any case, we are now approaching the Labor Day Weekend, and thus I wasn’t going to organize a game. This was based on the assumption that most locals would be leaving town for some stupid National Park, where there are more trees than people (as if trees were somehow "better" than Peter and Tim). But given how totally fortunate we are to be nowhere near the Gulf Coast, I think we should truly appreciate it by playing on a beautiful dry field in gorgeous, temperate weather.

Moreover, and aside from the fact that softball was the official sport of 19th century organized labor (the same people who brought you the two-day weekend), it turns out that if we do have a game, Jonny is going to bring his mom, who has just flown in from Johannesburg, South Africa to be with us! True, the last time I talked with him, he said that he was leaning toward taking her to Santa Cruz instead, but I think it’s quite clear that after they both read these very words, they’ll be there for the opening pitch, and mom will be feted as a national hero. Yes, rich are the gifts of self-fulfilling irony, and therefore there will be a game this Sunday at 11AM at SAN PABLO #2 (which is just like Codornices except that it isn’t), IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Raymond

Softball: Your Escape the Tragic World Sport

Dear People,

There will be a game this Sunday at 11AM at SAN PABLO #2, and as of now there are eight slots left. You’re therefore welcome to commit anybody you know, though people who are friendly and non-nutso are generally preferred.

Codorices will be closed for reseeding until November, so it’s likely most games we’ll be at SP for the next several weeks. If you show up at Codornices this Sunday, it will prove that you’re not only a dufus, but that you’re not paying attention.

$3 for the field/Park info below…Raymond 845-7552

PS: San Pablo #2 is at the corner of Mable and Oregon at San Pablo Park, about three blocks Northeast of the corner of Ashby and San Pablo. From San Pablo Avenue, turn East on to Oregon, drive three blocks and you’re there.
