Softball: 2060 (Guarded Optimism on the Gerontological Front)

Dear People,

My team beat Alan Miller’s 14-13, but it was a morally nuanced triumph that left me both conflicted and shaken. Indeed, their ferocious four-run last-inning rally was so utterly compelling that it nearly seduced my own inner infracaninophile. Perhaps this is because Kyle was making his community debut under Alan’s sagacious tutelage, and while only 12 years old, his searing singles to left and center showed once again why most scholars of the athletic arts feel there is nothing more inspiring than the inchoate talent of emerging pubescent youth.

Personally though, I believe Tristan’s stunning performance in the outfield was an even more inspirational display of raw rookie greatness. Oh sure, Kyle’s not yet a teen and the Trister’s now 22, but unlike the kid, Tristan is Dutch to the very marrow of his bones. As such, he grew up with fine cheeses and wooden clogs but nary a ball to be seen, and yet, on this, only the third game of his entire life, he snagged two rocketing bullets to right with such staggering team-saving grace that it’s as if he weren’t pursuing his PhD in cellular metabalomics (as he claims he is), but rather in the more accessible and titillating science of basic kinesiological kick-ass. Next time I see him, I plan to clarify.

The point is that I don’t understand what cellular metabalomics really is, and for that matter, I’ve known Ehud for 15 years, and yet for the life of me, I still can’t distinguish a protein from a toaster. Nevertheless, I get chills knowing that Tristan now joins a roster of towering softball-lovin’ Cal Bioacademics that includes not only the Huud, but also Stephanie, Tom, Alan S, Jeff W, Paul and Jim. For indeed, with this much biological genius marinating within the very crossroads of DNA and sport, I believe it’s only a matter of time before we as an aerobic community realize our lifelong dreams of playing our chosen pastime as vibrant centenarians who bat, field and run as if we were only 96. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond
