Softball: The Moral Worth of Baseline Prey
Dear People,
As you know, this past Sunday was Jonnys 33rd birthday, and thus you can imagine the guilt-laden sorrow I felt when my team brutally crushed his on the last hit of the game, 14-13. In reality, of course, their heartbreaking collapse was a broader metaphor for his deeply disappointing first third of a century, what with its unlimited initial potential, followed by decades of aerobic decay, aimless drift and an emerging universal consensus that in the grand panorama of the human experience, his is a life as profoundly meaningless as any persons on the face of this earth.
In any case, I would like to briefly comment on an incident that occurred in the bottom of the 7th, in which I personally slammed a searing ground ball right up the middle into deep center field. At that point we were still several runs back, and thus as I saw Peter dash for third, I turned on my after-burners in a determined attempt to fully exploit my hit. In all candor, I was almost giddy with pride as my single turned into a double, but apparently I must have been "distracted" or "underfocused" or "momentarily beyond retardo," for as I pulled into 2nd, I found myself staring right into the piercing and gorgeous brown corneas of none other than one Chris Fure. The Furinators presence confused me since he was on my team, yet there he was, standing on the very base from which I was now moronically seeking both sanctuary and succor.
Needless to say, this was an untenable situation, and thus I quickly shot back to first, yet Jonnys ravenous infielders immediately swarmed all about me, as if I were nothing more to them than a raw piece of veal. It was a humiliating experience, and frankly, their feral attack on my person makes me wonder if Modern HomoAthleticus is simply not familiar with the genteel Judeo-Christian values of mercy and respect. I honestly dont know, but I do know that we triumphed in spite of their cruelty, and if that totally ruined Jonnys 33rd birthday, then so much the better for my side. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning
