Softball: The Varied Textures of Proximity

Dear People,

Congratz to all on last week’s magnificient10-inning 15-14 won-on-the-last-hit paragon of pristine recreational excellence. Darryl’s catch for the ages, Chad’s game-winning double, and of course the sublime even-keeled captainship of both Andy and Ehud brought a magical aura to the understated Codornices tundra, and frankly, I’m just grateful to have been a part of it.

Oh sure, I didn’t actually see a single play, still trapped as I was in the dark and dank confines of my sister’s Seattle dungeon. Yet just to be in direct cell-phone contact as the innings progressed gave me a vicarious surge of such intense aerobic euphoria that it was as if my tiny little soul was actually there, dancing with giddy metaphysical abandon throughout the virgin-clay infield. And unlike any of you, I had the additional simultaneous joy of continuing to refine my prose on the utterly compelling interplay between rising levels of estrogen and pre-ovulatory cervical fluid. Yes, in the grand gestalt of life’s rich pageant, I guess I’m just blessed.

All spinning aside, I am now safely back in Berkeley, far from my sister’s surprisingly repressive and sticky tentacles. In addition, and as you know, this weekend marks the 138th anniversary of the birth of Herman "legs" Long, the legendary Boston Beaneater whose 1,037 career errors was an inimitable major league record that stands to this very day! No, his tentacles were clearly not sticky, but he was as kind as he was inept, and he will always have a place deep in my ticker. And therefore, there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 5:00, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Raymond
