Softball: Internationalist Remorse from the Latest Community Churn
Dear People,
On what may have been his last unaffiliated email-organized game for the rest of this increasingly dubious decade (or perhaps he'll be back next month-who really knows?), Chee went 5 for 5 on some of the finest batting of his long and storied career, and for that, you can be sure that the entire Malaysian nation went meshugge with pure aerobic pride. Unfortunately, the Cheester was stuck on my team, and while we had a robust 14-11 lead going into the 8th, Chris Fure's contingent suddenly unleashed a shameless 10-hit 8-run anti-Borneon assault. My side tried to regroup in the 9th, but in the end, the shock was simply too much to overcome, and thus we went down, and down hard, 19-14.
Chee, of course, is now heading back to his beloved Ranau (in the deeply misunderstood state of Sabah), and while Chris may have been giddy about his come-from-behind triumph, perhaps his post-game shit-eating grin would've been tempered had he only realized that by bespattering our hero's final American team in ignominious defeat, the odds of his ever getting another Q-1&Mac185; Softball Visa were basically destroyed. Sure, he'll always have the unseemly tourist, student and au pair options, or perhaps like so many Malay before him, he'll fly to Vancouver before sneaking across the catastrophically unfenced Yukonian-Alaskan border.
So yeah, I get it; If Chee's determined, he'll find a way to get his self-deporting ass back to us. Yet I was the captain that failed him when the stakes were at their highest, and for that alone I have no choice but to tender my resignation and retreat to my own childhood shtetl in suburban Kuala Lumpur. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond
