Softball: The Tyranny of Arbitrary Allocations of Public Properties
Dear People,
My sincere regrets for the debacle of this Saturday, particularly to those of you who drove great distances with the most innocent of athletic intentions, your parched throats not sated by the mere play of one and half innings, sublime as those innings were. In any case, the fact remains that over18 people once again showed up, and
I for one am determined to not have the momentum of this noble experiment in athletic democracy crushed by a junta of prepubescent little league fascists.
In order to forever avoid a repeat of last Saturday's fiasco, I have researched the situation and come up with some promising news. While all Berkeley City fields are basically reserved both weekend days from now until the end of the summer (and until 7pm, which was new as of this last week), Kleeberger field is obtainable, and reservable for free, by Cal Rec club members. I actually think Kleeberger is a much better field since it is astroturf, pristine and clean, and very big (there are in fact two fields back to back).
Unfortunately, I will not be here this weekend to ease your softball pain, but as of Monday, 7/14, I'm pretty sure that me or a student surrogate will be able to join Cal Rec, and I will immediately reserve for the following Saturday (Depending on that expense, I may ask for $1 a game per person to split the cost). By then, I will have also scouted out solutions to the one disadvantage that Kleeberger has, which is a shitty parking situation.
Since I think Saturdays will be unreserved all day long, feel free
to let me know now if you have a time preference. Otherwise, I'll probably stick w/ a 4 or 5 pm start for July 19th. I realize the upshot of all this is that it will have been three long weeks between true games, but we have to be stout in the face of unspeakable deprivations.
Game details next week...Ray
