Softball: A Primer on the Timing of Celebration
Dear People,
Jeff Ws team flayed my own, 18-11, but once again, my side played with far more panache, good cheer and aerobic je-ne-sais-quoi. For example, when Sonny smashed a towering fly ball to deep center left in the bottom of the 4th with two out, two on and the score tied at five, Anthony was waiting with joyous laser-like focus. Indeed, the Capemans infectious confidence had already imbued our entire team, and thus we all smiled assuredly as he began to dance like a disco-crazed Captain Marvel in the seconds before Sonnys hit plummeted back to earth.
Unfortunately, and for reasons I dont pretend to understand, Tony seemed to misjudge the trajectory of the ball in question, and thus as the cherished orb sailed over his flailing little arms, the strain of mixing a boogie-woogie two-step with sudden backward stammering proved a tad too much. Indeed, it was as if a giant invisible table cloth had been suddenly yanked out from under him, and thus the Antman soon slammed his buttocks, back and ego directly on to the ground below.
Needless to say, the ball was not caught, two runs scored, our momentum was crushed and the game was probably lost forever on that single breach of judgment, proving once again that among the great rituals of complex athletic etiquette, the much beloved victory jig is one that should never be performed before any given play is actually over. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning
