Softball: The Semantic Dialectics of Game Theory

Dear People,

My team slathered Jim McGuire's in a viscous glaze of heartbreak-honey, 10-9, but it should go without saying that in a match that's so consistently well-played, there are no true losers (unless, of course, you're one of those shallow types who focus on 'the score'). Indeed, the conceptual essence of this bilateral triumph was perfectly captured in the 3rd, when Michael Tucker unleashed a magnificent 2-RBI triple to deep center right, for as good ol' Tuckytoes trotted around second, he happily exchanged high-fives with Kira---infielder extraordinaire, his cherished S.O., and most importantly, the mother of his progeny. Even better, Levi was there in the stands to observe it all, and while I gently explained to the little tyke that both his parents were now guilty of cavorting with the enemy, the Leviator just kept on beaming with burgeoning familial pride. Yeah, the innocence of the ankle-biters will always leave me jocund.

In any case, the score remained tied at eight in the 7th with two on and two out when Mel suddenly unleashed the longest double to center-right that this league has ever witnessed, and as such, it seemed destined to be the breakout hit that my team had been craving. Yet once again, the harmonizing effects of the Nash Equilibrium immersed the local ether, for as Michael Gonzalez rounded 3rd and took off for home, Alan Shabel's blistering throw to the plate beat him by an admittedly unseemly 3.5 seconds (Needless to say, our failure to post a base-coach is irrelevant, for no doctrine of decision-making analysis can truly explain what happened).

The point is that when seen within the context of the individual gestalt, Mikie's judgment and celerity were an irrefutable disgrace, and yet I'd gently remind you that in the end, they were also totally moot. More specifically, not only did his quixotic little sprint implicitly honor Mel for the glory of her blast, but in the end, he still found himself safely ensconced on my side-modest in our triumph, but relieved of the taint that comes with rank competitive failure. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning. . . Raymond
