Softball: Another Episode in the Mysteries of Cognition
Dear People,
In one of those ceaselessly see-sawing paragons of pure aerobic excellence, my team beat Allan Brills on the last hit of the match, 12-11. Siobhans 9th inning blast to right was not only a transformative game-winning RBI, but it rendered utterly irrelevant Nancis own retardulous contribution to our triumph, just two short innings earlier. Now look, a win is a win, and when victory is achieved, theres simply no need to focus on the rarified exemplars of uniquely pathetic play. And yeah, I happen to mean that, even if the incident in question is potentially vulnerable to the facile narrative of a taunting pen.
Nevertheless, and as best I recall, the score was tied at 9 with two out and a runner on 2nd when Steve Bedrick hit a blistering 7th inning grounder right up the middle. As you may know, the Nanster is considered a somewhat fragile infielder, but at this pivotal moment, she was focused like a laser, and as the ball darted toward her, she scooped it up with the intrepid poise of a seasoned pro. I could see her beam with pride as she grabbed the orb from her mitt, and as I stuck out my own glove for the rally-killing throw to first, I was already thinking that she was now clearly ascending to the vital lower-middle-lower tier of our broad athletic roster.
Unfortunately, and for reasons I dont pretend to understand, Nanci looked at me coyly, paused for a split second, and then inexplicably threw the ball to Chris Fure, who was leisurely chatting with the stationary runner at 2nd. In retrospect (and quite bluntly, even at the time), this run-costing throw was arguably somewhere between totally pointless and indisputably asinine, but in fairness, the very concept of a force play is both fraught with complexity and utterly overrated. So yes, perhaps Nanci blew it in the traditional sense, but given that our team eventually went on to win anyway, I think its quite clear that there is always room for a developing young athlete to follow her confused and wayward heart. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning
