Softball: Conceptual Variations in Filial Majesty

Dear People,

On a stirring Mother’s Day afternoon in which pounding intermittent drizzles would’ve caused other aerobic communities to frantically flee to their cabanas, Alan Miller’s team rallied from a 10-run deficit to crush my own, and crush it good, 27-25. Enid was simply radiant in her triumph, for not only did she get the win in this ceaselessly grueling pitcher’s duel, but both Macabe and Grady backed up their mom with feisty hitting, stellar fielding and an amorphous Je-ne-sais-qoui that was so inspiring in execution that even my own bosom swelled with tingly maternal pride.

Indeed, I found myself cheering them on until the top of 7th, when it suddenly dawned on me that Macbeth and the Gradiator were not only not my sons, but in fact were treacherous adolescent scoundrels out to destroy my team. Did that realization leave me feeling foolish, bitter and unclean? Yeah, if you must know, it did.

Regardless, I had other ancestral distractions that fine day, for as most of you probably know, last week’s issue of Science published a provocative study on the DNA of certain bone fragments which prove beyond doubt that almost all of us are approximately 2-4% Neanderthal. Now look, I’m hardly a professional geneticist and you may find the whole discovery totally disturbing, but truth be told, I take a certain pride in knowing that my great, great, great grandpapa was a hairy, smelly and hideous-looking Croatian troglodyte. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning….Ray

Softball: Dogs

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, and as of now it is full. As always, please let me know ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and feel free to contact me later for reopened slots (To clarify some past confusion among some: You should get on a wait list if you know you want to play but you’re now locked out, but regardless, wait listed people tend to make other plans or are not around when I call them, so there’s often a decent chance you can still get in if you contact me late Saturday or that morning).

This week’s field fee is just $4, and that includes a complimentary one year subscription to the UCLA Journal of Dandie Dinmont Terriers and other Cat-Sized Hounds. . .Raymond 845-7552
