Softball: The Epiphany of a Non-Breeder
Dear People,
My team brined Chris Fure's in a big ol' vat of loser-lard, 18-13, and as one who went 5 for 5 against their dissy little 'Ray-shift,' I'm not ashamed to admit how deeply satisfying it is to tell you that. Still, I doubt I ever felt as vital and alive as Michael Tucker, whose 5th-inning 3-error triple to super shallow right not only gave us the big mo' we craved, but also proved once again that there's no point in runners stopping at 2nd if there are no fielders waiting to tag them at 3rd (To be sure, the failure of leadership that such a defensive posture reflects is something that Chris will have to ponder long and hard in the regret-filled decades to come).
Of course it was the inimitable Alan Shabel who truly secured our destiny, for not only did he execute four double plays from short, but he also blasted the victory-sealing 8th-inning 3-RBI rocket that soared 15 yards into the yak-laden bush beyond deep, dark left. That he did this only after his adoring filial units had already left the park shows that for the Shabelator, it isn't about familial pride or ego or even making a statement, but rather about the simple aerobic Zen that comes from kicking some ass. Understood, and mindfully so.
In any case, and speaking of the grandeur of immediate kin, it turns out that this Sunday is Mother's Day, so naturally I wasn't going to organize a game so that you could all be stuck at home with your extended nuclear families. But then I started thinking about it some more, and when I considered that Kira, Olga, Ramona, Enid, Susan and Ali are just some of the superstar-athlete-moms amongst us, it suddenly occurred to me that I myself would be a mom if only it weren't for my gender, squeamishness and responsiphobic neurosis. So yeah, I'd like to celebrate my vicariously special day by playing some ball, and therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning. . . Softball: The Scarcity of Time
Dear People,
There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday 11, and as of now it is full. As always, please let me know ASAP if you committed and need to cancel, and if you still want in, feel free to get on the wait list or contact me later for news of reopened slots.
Please bring $4 for the field, which for this week only includes my long-awaited post-match symposium on how to balance your ceaselessly conflicting commitments to work, family, your smartphone and softball
