Softball: Another Tale of Fatal Seduction

Dear People,

On a perfectly broiling East Bay day, Jonny’s team crushed mine, 20-15, but only after they methodically drained the communal lifeblood from our desiccated bodies. In the end, they weren’t as powerful, brilliant or determined as we were, yet they did play with a certain Machiavellian sagacity, and as you can imagine, that’s really hard to defend against when it’s so friggin’ hot.

The transformative moment may have been Frank’s sacrifice pickle in the 5th (his 98th this year), which cost us two runs on two errors in 23 ghastly seconds. As you may know, the Frankensteiner has a long history of playing the deceptively vulnerable base-runner card, but this time, as he darted his way recklessly past 1st on a shallow line drive to left, I was utterly convinced that Ken and I had a badly wounded wildebeest which was now ready to cull. Unfortunately, I may have miscalculated the underlying physics of our rapidly closing pincer, which perhaps explains why— as Frankie slid giggly into 2nd and Pace dashed for home—I inexplicably threw the ball into deep center right.

The point is that while my performance may have exposed a somewhat subdued blend of precision, judgment and leadership, I think we can all agree that at the end of the day, someone else somewhere must surely take the blame. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray

Softball: 10:58 10:58 10:58…

Dear People,

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, and as of now, there are still four slots left.

Important Notice: This Sunday the field is officially reserved from 9 to 11AM and 1 to 5PM, by some weirdo rogue entity called the Berkeley-Albany Girl’s Softball League. I don’t know if they’ll actually show up, but regardless, I want to start as close to 11 as possible (unless they’re actually there beforehand, in which case I might charm them with some intra-recreational peace, love and flexibility). This means that I expect everyone to be at the park at 10:58AM AT THE LATEST, which is just like 11:13 except it’s actually 15 minutes earlier.

This week’s field fee is just $3, and that includes a complimentary one year subscription to Goat: The UCLA Journal of American Hircine Studies...Ray

PS: Ken is now organizing robust ultimate Frisbee games Wednesday evenings at Codornices. If you’d like to get a joyous weekly aerobic workout and are not yet on his email list, let me know and I’ll make sure you get added.
