Softball: Whatever it Takes

Dear People,

It is Friday morning and we are still SEVERAL players short of a minimum quorum for tomorrow's game. As you can imagine, booking at Codornices involves delicate organizational and financial risks, and I will not give the go ahead without a clear mandate from the people.

I have thought long and hard as to why I have so far failed to galvanize the aerobic zeal of the communal whole. Obviously, I am not insensitive to the jarring impact of change itself, and certainly understand that for many of you, the move from Kleeberger at Noon to Codornices at 5:00 is simply too frightening a leap in space and time. I understand this, and fully concede that organic grasses in and of themselves are simply not going to change that. However, it did occur to me last night that I neglected to mention, perhaps because I thought it was so obvious, that tomorrow is the 111th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Red Sox outfielder Tris Speaker, whose 792 career doubles is unsurpassed to this very day!! I think you see my point.

You know, sometimes when I'm at the plate, I look beyond the piercing eyes of the pitcher to the distant virgin clays of the immediate 2nd base area, and I tell myself that while the goal may seem quixotic, Tris has already paved that path. I suspect that most of you have your own Tris Speaker stories that keep you reassured when the competitive edge of the game momentarily leaves you flummoxed. That's the legacy of Tris, and in overcoming your fears and making that commit, you honor him in the most appropriate way I could possibly imagine; By agreeing to play, hit and strive for that double, all under the watchful eyes of the many curiously approachable softball-loving Codornices Yak.....Raymond

PS: I will be frolicking until mid afternoon, but will send out game news immediately upon my return. If it doesn't reach you in time, you are welcome to call....Raymond 845-7552
