Softball: Your Official Good Time Easter Sport

Dear People,

I am relieved to report that after seven harrowing weeks, my extended aerobic dance with win-free living is over! Yes, my side crushed Mike Davey’s team 10-5, and this despite the fact that they objectively had more power-hitters, a better seasoned infield and a certain je ne sais quoi that even I found delightfully sensual. Of course we had Chris Fure, whose deistic pitching that fine day was all the quoi we really needed.

I still get chills when I think how Chris pummeled Mike, Craig, Keith and even Art into bat-flailing spectacles of cowering athletic mush. Yes, he held them all scoreless for seven out of nine innings (!), and in my book, that makes his slide, curve and understated spittle balls the most lethal and manly forces in the history of our community mound, and I’m not saying that just because everything about it sounds dirty and lurid.

In any case, and as some of you may know, this upcoming weekend marks the 1,971st anniversary of the death and somewhat implausible post-mortal stirrings of Jesus of Nazareth, that long-haired radical hippie Jew whose enduring message of peace, love and tolerance is so universally practiced today (Indeed, and with the possible exception of Iraq, Afghanistan, Serbia, Macedonia, Chechnya, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, the Congo, Columbia, Kosovo, Israel, Palestine, Belfast, the Sudan, Somalia, the Religious Right, Azerbaijan, Burma, the Korean Peninsula, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Bolivia, Liberia, Kashmir, Nepal, Tibet, the Taiwan Strait, Chiapas, Haiti and a few hundred other places, it seems that the Christmeister’s words have transformed the human spirit!) And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Raymond

Softball: Hardball (More Warm Bodies!) (WWJD?!)

Dear People,

It is Friday morning and we are STILL a couple players short of an absolute bare minimum quorum for Sunday’s game. As you Know, I take organizational integrity quite seriously, and thus will forego the field reservation and cancel the match (for the first time in over three years!), unless I get at least two more commits in the next few hours.

Now look, I realize that this Sunday is Easter and that for many of you, it’s a day to be with loved ones and partake in fine Christian cuisine and all of that, and I’m obviously not going to sit here and grovel and try to persuade you to do otherwise. That would be crass, and I’m just not going to do it.

Still, I would gently point out that in Paul’s final letter to the Romans (written in Corinth about 57AD), he told citizens of the empire that Jesus was the Lord of all human beans. As such, he (Saul)(Paul) wanted the people to be hearty and hale, if for no other reason than "the body is the aerobic temple of the soul." Well, fair enough, but how can one develop a robust physique for the Lord if you’re pigging out with your dysfunctional family while sitting there on your lazy forgiven ass? I think you see my point, and that’s why there is still the possibility of a game, IF I get a couple more commits in the next few hours….Raymond
