Softball: East of Java

Dear People,

My team beat Ellen’s 18-12, in one of those lingering and wistful matches that span the entire panoply of human drama. I refer you to Monty, perhaps the greatest lurker in the history of our league, who, after nearly a year in the cybershadows, made his magnificent, real-world debut. Alas, on the second hit of the day, or more precisely, 44 seconds into the game, Mike Davey sliced a solid line drive to deep center-right, whereupon Monty herocially scooped it up, threw it briskly back to the infield, and then immediately proceeded to pull a hamstring.

OK, sure, 49 seconds is not a particularly long career by community standards, but when our proud decade-long recreational tale is finally written, the Montymeister’s reign will be noted with well-deserved deference and awe. In fact, I don’t even know what the hell a hamstring is, but my guess is that it’s either totally overrated or completely unnecessary, and thus I’m sure he’ll soon be back for at least another minute of pure athletic glory.

In any case, with my team now Montlyess and reeling, Steve Seskin took a somewhat more traditional approach to the burdens of kinesiological dominance. Yes, with two out in the 4th, the Seskinator blasted a two-RBI bomb at least two feet beyond the outstretched mitts of Ellen's discombobulated outfielders, proving once again that:

A) Generally speaking, “outfielders” shouldn't be hanging out next to the shortstop or 2nd baseman, and
B) Steve has always been the Krakatoa of our league—coy, subtle and physically breathtaking, AND just waiting to explode with the pure unexpected aerobic ferocity of the great 19th century Indonesian outback.

The point is that just because it was only a single, Sesky’s hit was a zeitgeist-shifting milestone that redefined the inning, the game and perhaps our entire understanding of the deceptively dormant superstar. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11AM, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray
