Softball: Passion Plays

First of all, let me say right at the outset that I’m not the type of guy to throw around asterisks like some kind of canine piss marker whenever the mood happens to strike me. The fact is that Frank’s team gave my own a 20-7* whuppin that I’ll probably never forget for the rest of my waning youth, and indeed, perhaps the only saving grace to come from the sins of my feckless captainship is knowing that the Christmeister has already forgiven me (Corinthians 6-4: "The aerobic peoples of leathered glovings will flourish in thine Kingdom of righteous scoreitude"). Yeah, just a little detail that good ’ol Gibsy Boy left out of his scourgathon, lest you were wondering where I was going with this.

The point is that if you take away the totally anomalous 13-run 5th inning, the simple reality is that my team outscored Frank’s, 7-7. Now do I "know" that the Lord would have scratched the Satan-corrupted 5th if I had respectfully asked him, as both a fellow Hebrew and a southpaw? Yes, I do, and that is in fact why the asterisk is not only not arbitrary, but why it remains an enduring symbol of transcendent athletic justice. And therefore there will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11:00, IF I get enough commits by this Friday morning…Ray

Softball: The Crossroads of Sport and Democracy

There will be a game at Codornices this Sunday at 11:00, and of now, there are still TWO slots left.

Please bring $2 for the field, which for this week only, includes a rare opportunity to see my sister defend the Weschler family’s aerobic honor—Toni will be playing deep, deep, deep right field, next to the porch of the dilapidated house across the street on Euclid….Raymond 845-7552

PS: As you know, this missive is a recreational listserv, and does not engage in the crass realities of presidential politics. Nor, obviously, am I about to start now. However, it did recently come to my attention that Ken Doane, one of the most cherished power-hitting shortstops in the history of our little community, has a few STRICTLY NON-PARTISAN insights to share on the current situation, and if you don’t make the time to take a quick look, I am convinced with every fiber of my being that you’ll end up batting and fielding like Toni….
